PC vs consoles 2017


Console wars are alive in well going into 2018. This week the big debate is what platform performed best during 2017. The good news on this front is that the PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One all have something to be proud of. But like everything else in this world, there has to be a winner.


When you really want to get down to it, the best way to compare a console's execution during a year is to look at how many "good exclusives" it had. Games unavailable anywhere else that managed to average at a 75 Metascore or higher. Games that, for better or worse, drive people to the platform.

And based on this metric there was a pretty clear divide between all the platforms. Xbox One came well behind with only one to account for, while PC crushed it with a total of 40. Meanwhile, PS4 and Switch fell in the middle of the spectrum.

As many gamers feared in 2016, Microsoft has shifted to a third-party focused model where it has fallen behind significantly in funding first-party development. It's worked well enough to keep the brand afloat, but has cost it significant market share throughout the course of this generation.
